Mesoscale Discussion 0697
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1108 PM CDT Sat May 23 2020
Areas affected...Central Nebraska
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 213...
Valid 240408Z - 240615Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 213
continues.
SUMMARY...A wind damage and isolated large hail threat will likely
continue for a few more hours. An isolated tornado threat may also
occur as well. Weather watch issuance will be possible to the east
of the current watch in the next 2 to 3 hours.
DISCUSSION...At the surface, a 998 mb low is located in southeast
Colorado. A cold front is moving east-southeastward across western
Nebraska. A continuous line segment is ongoing along the front. The
line is moving into surface dewpoints in the lower 60s F where RAP
is analyzing MLCAPE of 2000 to 2500 J/kg. This combined with 40 to
45 kt of deep-layer shear, evident on Thedford, Nebraska WSR-88D
VWP, will support a wind damage and hail threat with the stronger
cells embedded in the line. Further to the east, a cluster of storms
is ongoing to the west of Broken Bow, Nebraska. Supercells within
this cluster will have an isolated large hail and wind damage
threat. A brief tornado will also be possible. As these storms move
northeastward toward the edge of WW 213, new weather watch issuance
may need to be considered.
