Mesoscale Discussion 0710
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0348 PM CDT Sun May 24 2020
Areas affected...West Texas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 218...
Valid 242048Z - 242215Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 218
continues.
SUMMARY...The damaging wind and large hail threat continues across
watch 218.
DISCUSSION...The large cluster of storms in Pecos/Terrell county has
already produced 1.5 inch hail with 2030Z MRMS MESH suggesting hail
over 2 inches is likely. Expect this cluster to continue to pose a
very large hail/damaging wind threat given the very unstable and
steep lapse rate environment. Additional storm development seems
likely within the hour farther north along the dryline as towering
cumulus can now be observed along most of the boundary. However
2030Z regional VWPs show a lull in mid-level flow at MAF with
stronger flow at LBB and DRT. This may limit storm
organization/longevity farther north in the watch except for the
northern most row or two of counties bordering watch 219. The latest
runs from the HRRR suggest this activity could impact Dawson and
Martin counties. Therefore, trends will continue to be monitored to
see if watch 218 needs an areal extension.
