Mesoscale Discussion 0830
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0934 PM CDT Thu Jun 04 2020
Areas affected...Lubbock...TX and vicinity
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 251...
Valid 050234Z - 050330Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 251
continues.
SUMMARY...A cluster of storms may persist for the next hour or two
near Lubbock, TX with large hail and damaging winds possible. A
local watch extension may be necessary.
DISCUSSION...Storms have continued to form off the western edge of
an outflow boundary from convection that pushed south-southeast
across the Texas South Plains this evening. As the dryline has
slowly started to retreat, the area for potential severe storms has
expanded westward, which has allowed these storms to develop and
intensify. The transition from transient supercellular convection to
multicellular, more outflow dominant convection has occurred over
the last hour as daytime heating waned. This trend is likely to
continue, but severe winds/hail are still possible over the next
hour and possibly slightly longer. The low level jet is forecast to
strengthen later tonight, but these storms may not last long enough
to be influenced. A local watch extension (in time) may be necessary
past 03z, but a new watch is unlikely.
