Mesoscale Discussion 0852
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1229 PM CDT Sat Jun 06 2020
Areas affected...central and eastern Colorado
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch needed soon
Valid 061729Z - 061900Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent
SUMMARY...Thunderstorms are beginning to develop across the central
Rockies late this morning. Strong wind gusts are likely with storms
through this afternoon. A watch is likely needed by 19z.
DISCUSSION...A negatively tilted shortwave trough and 75 kt 500 mb
jet near the Four Corners is beginning overspreading the eastern
portions of the central Rocky Mountains and Colorado High Plains.
Despite ongoing cloud cover, strong dynamic lift and gradual warming
of the boundary layer will result in weak destabilization with
MLCAPE of 250-500 J/kg. Bands of convection emanating from the
mountains will pose a risk for strong wind gusts given the very
strong flow aloft. A severe thunderstorm watch will likely be need
by 19z.
