Mesoscale Discussion 0977
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0116 AM CDT Tue Jun 23 2020
Areas affected...Parts of the Texas South Plains/Big Country and
north central Texas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 296...
Valid 230616Z - 230745Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 296
continues.
SUMMARY...A line of intense thunderstorms overspreading the region
will probably continue to pose a risk for severe wind gusts into the
4-6 AM CDT time frame, before gradually diminishing. A new severe
weather watch will be issued to the southeast of Severe Thunderstorm
Watch 296 shortly.
DISCUSSION...A fairly significant convectively generated surface
cold pool, with 2-5 mb 2-hourly surface pressure rises, continues to
advance southeastward into the Texas Big Country and South Plains.
Forward propagation is a relatively modest 30 kt or so, but strong
to severe gusts continue to be recorded in association with it, and
lift along its leading edge is maintaining intensity to the the
convection based on latest radar, lightning and satellite imagery.
Based on its current strength, this seems likely to persist at least
another several hours, before tending to gradually weaken in the
absence of more favorable larger-scale forcing for ascent.
