Mesoscale Discussion 0979
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1201 PM CDT Tue Jun 23 2020
Areas affected...central Arkansas into northern Mississippi and
southwest Tennessee
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 231701Z - 231930Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Scattered strong storms are likely to persist this
afternoon as they travel east/southeast, with marginal wind and hail
threat.
DISCUSSION...Moderate instability has developed from AR into MS
where areas of heating persist. Isolated cells are rapidly
developing near the weak surface trough, which is also just ahead of
a small MCS emanating northeastward from the earlier TX system.
Storm coverage is likely to increase today, spreading east out of AR
into MS and possibly southwest TN. Locally damaging wind gusts
appear to be the main threat, with isolated marginal hail possible.
Shear will remain weak, but 20+ kt westerlies aloft will help to get
storms moving east/southeast.
