Mesoscale Discussion 0981
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0504 PM CDT Tue Jun 23 2020
Areas affected...Eastern New Mexico
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 298...
Valid 232204Z - 240000Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 298
continues.
SUMMARY...Severe threat continues across much of eastern New Mexico.
DISCUSSION...Strong boundary-layer heating appears mostly
responsible for scattered convection that has developed across
eastern CO/NM this afternoon. Although, a very weak short-wave
trough may be contributing to background support for this activity
as it begins to spread across the High Plains, propagating decidedly
south-southeast. Several supercells have evolved and are likely
producing hail in excess of 1 inch. Gradual upward-evolving
thunderstorm clusters are expected over the next few hours and hail
should remain the primary threat until more linear structures
develop. At that time, wind may become more common with this
activity.
