Mesoscale Discussion 0990
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0356 PM CDT Wed Jun 24 2020
Areas affected...portions of New Mexico
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 242056Z - 242300Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Storms are developing over the higher terrain across much
of New Mexico this afternoon. Marginally severe hail/wind are
possible with these storms and some south-southeast movement off the
higher terrain this afternoon/evening is expected.
DISCUSSION...An upper-level ridge over the Desert Southwest has
resulted in north-northwest flow over much of New Mexico. Low-level
moisture has pushed westward with surface dewpoints of in the 40s to
low 50s F across much of New Mexico east of the Continental Divide.
Currently storms are staying mostly tied to the terrain, but as
destabilization continues across adjacent plains/valleys, storms are
likely to move south-southeast later this afternoon and into the
evening. Steep lapse rates exist through the mid-levels across the
region with marginally severe hail/wind possible with these storms.
With relatively weak flow through the column, outflow dominant
storms are likely. Given the marginal and isolated severe risk, a
watch issuance is unlikely.
