Mesoscale Discussion 1001
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0448 PM CDT Thu Jun 25 2020
Areas affected...Northern South Carolina...west-central North
Carolina...and southern Virginia
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 252148Z - 252315Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...5 percent
SUMMARY...Isolated severe storms are expected into the evening.
Isolated large hail and damaging winds will be the primary threat.
DISCUSSION...A few isolated storms have developed this evening along
a diffuse surface trough which recently crossed the Appalachians.
Additional storm coverage will likely be limited as the region
begins to cool this evening. MLCAPE around 1000 J/kg and effective
shear around 45 knots has supported rotating updrafts with any
storms which have developed. These storms, and any additional storms
which may develop within the hour, may be capable of large hail and
damaging winds for a few hours. However, intensity will likely
remain marginally severe due to limited instability and weak lapse
rates (~6 C/km per 12Z regional RAOBs and SPC Mesoanalysis).
