Mesoscale Discussion 1002
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0509 PM CDT Thu Jun 25 2020
Areas affected...Eastern Virginia and eastern Maryland
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 252209Z - 252345Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Scattered severe storms are expected to continue through
the evening.
DISCUSSION...Scattered storms have developed in eastern Virginia and
eastern Maryland. The two primary clusters are near Richmond and DC
as of 6 PM EDT. Instability remains somewhat limited across the
region with MLCAPE around 1000 J/kg per SPC mesoanalysis, but
effective shear near 50 knots has helped support storm organization.
Marginal mid-level lapse rates and weak flow in the lowest 3 km will
be the primary limiting factors to a more widespread severe weather
event, but isolated large hail and damaging winds will be possible
with storms as they continue into the evening. The upper-level
support should allow strong storms to persist for at least a few
more hours despite a cooling boundary layer.
