Mesoscale Discussion 1010
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0540 PM CDT Fri Jun 26 2020
Areas affected...Southeastern Iowa...far northeastern Missouri...and
far western Illinois
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 305...
Valid 262240Z - 262345Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 305
continues.
SUMMARY...Storms forming in southeastern Iowa will likely become
severe within the hour. An expansion of watch 305 may be needed.
DISCUSSION...Within the last 30 minutes, storms have started to form
in southeast Iowa along and south of a cold front where dewpoints
are maximized in the low to mid 70s. This area currently has MLCAPE
around 2500 J/kg per SPC mesoanalysis and effective shear around 40
knots per KDVN 20Z RAOB. Therefore, these storms are expected to be
supercellular and pose a threat for large hail and damaging winds.
An areal extension of watch 306 will likely be needed to cover this
threat.
In addition, a later MCD and watch will probably be needed farther
west in Iowa and into Nebraska/Kansas later this evening.
