Mesoscale Discussion 1138
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0410 AM CDT Wed Jul 08 2020
Areas affected...Northeast South Dakota...Far Southeast North
Dakota...West-central Minnesota
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 342...
Valid 080910Z - 081115Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 342
continues.
SUMMARY...An isolated wind-damage and hail threat will continue for
another hour or two in northeastern South Dakota and west-central
Minnesota. The threat is expected to become too marginal for another
watch downstream.
DISCUSSION...The latest radar imagery shows a line of strong to
severe storms across far southeastern North Dakota. This line will
move quickly eastward across western Minnesota over the next couple
of hours. This line is located along a northwest-to-southeast
gradient of moderate instability where the RAP is showing MLCAPE in
the 1000 to 2000 J/kg range. But instability is weaker across
west-central Minnesota along the expected track of the MCS. For this
reason, the wind-damage and hail threat should gradually become
marginal. Weather watch issuance is not expected to the east of WW
342.
