Mesoscale Discussion 1157
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1248 PM CDT Thu Jul 09 2020
Areas affected...Northern Maine
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 091748Z - 091915Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...A very isolated severe hail/wind risk may continue across
far northern Maine through early/mid-afternoon, mainly across
Aroostook County.
DISCUSSION...An isolated right-moving supercell is ongoing across
Aroostook County, roughly 30-35 miles north of the Houlton
area/I-95. This storm is within environment by a relatively
long/straight hodographs with 40+ kt effective shear, with
instability maximized where storms are ongoing across northern
Maine, in vicinity of a differential heating zone where morning
clouds are abating. Current thinking is these isolated
storms/supercell are probably near peak intensity, but the potential
for isolated severe hail/wind may persist across far northeast Maine
through around mid-afternoon as storms drift southeastward.
