   Mesoscale Discussion 1295
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0717 PM CDT Mon Jul 20 2020

   Areas affected...West-central Nebraska

   Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 389...

   Valid 210017Z - 210145Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 389
   continues.

SUMMARY...Severe hail/wind potential continues within Severe
Thunderstorm Watch 389 primarily across Cherry County in northern
Nebraska as well as southwest Nebraska through early/mid-evening.

DISCUSSION...Persistent multi-hour severe storms continue to slowly
merge across southwest Nebraska south of I-80, but even with this
merging tendency, an intense supercell is noted across southwest
Lincoln County as of 705pm CDT. The ambient environment across this
portion of southwest Nebraska is characterized by upwards of
2500-3000 J/kg MLCAPE and as much as 40-50 kt effective shear as
deduced from regional WSR-88D VWP data. Further quasi-linear upscale
growth may occur over the next 1-2 hours, with some increase in
damaging wind potential. An expected southeastward motion toward the
edge of/out of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 389 suggests some
consideration might need to be given to an additional watch across
   far southwest Nebraska/northwest Kansas.

Farther north, an additional storm cluster should continue to pose a
damaging wind/severe hail risk primarily across Cherry County over
the next hour or two. A combination of convective outflow and an
increasing cirrus canopy may keep the severe threat somewhat
limited/less focused across other parts of the Nebraska Sandhills.
