Mesoscale Discussion 1333
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0509 PM CDT Fri Jul 24 2020
Areas affected...Eastern Tennessee...Southwestern Virginia...and far
Western North Carolina
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 242209Z - 242315Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...5 percent
SUMMARY...A few damaging wind gusts remain possible for the next 1-2
hours, watch unlikely.
DISCUSSION...Regional radar shows a few clusters of storms have
emerged from diurnally driven convection over the region, with
perhaps some assistance from a mid-level vort max evident in water
vapor imagery. These storms have produced a few localized damaging
wind gusts, particularly over parts of northeast Tennessee. As
these storms continue to drift southeast amid modest buoyancy
(MLCAPE 1000-1500 J/kg) and weak deep-layer shear, the threat for a
few additional damaging wind gusts will continue for the next hour
or two. With time, a downward trend in intensity is expected with
the loss of daytime heating and as the clusters approach a
stabilized airmass that was modified by storms that occurred
previously over southwestern North Carolina. Given the localized and
transient nature of this threat, watch issuance remains unlikely.
