Mesoscale Discussion 1449
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0945 AM CDT Mon Aug 10 2020
Areas affected...Portions of central IA
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 425...
Valid 101445Z - 101615Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 425
continues.
SUMMARY...The greatest severe/damaging wind threat will focus over
central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro area, over the next
hour or two.
DISCUSSION...Numerous measured severe wind gusts have been observed
across eastern NE and western IA over the past hour in association
with a small MCS. As this bow moves quickly eastward (around 45-50
kt) into central IA this morning, it will encounter an increasingly
unstable airmass. A focused corridor of severe/damaging winds of
60-70+ mph appears likely given recent radar trends, with the
development of a real-inflow jet and strong inbound velocities noted
on the KDMX radar. This corridor will likely include the Des Moines
metro area, with extrapolation of current storm motion suggesting
arrival in this area around 16Z (11 AM CDT).
