Mesoscale Discussion 1574
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0511 PM CDT Tue Aug 25 2020
Areas affected...Portions of southern New England and the Northeast
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 450...
Valid 252211Z - 260015Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 450
continues.
SUMMARY...Isolated damaging winds, and perhaps an instance of severe
hail, will continue to be possible within WW 450 for the next couple
of hours.
DISCUSSION...Recent radar trends continue to show scattered
thunderstorms translating eastward across New England in tandem with
a surface trough. Although storm coverage should remain relatively
limited, ongoing convection will continue to reside within a
sufficiently unstable air mass (1000-2000 J/kg MLCAPE) along and
ahead of the trough with around 40 knots of effective shear that is
supportive of periodic storm organization intensification. Several
damaging wind reports have been noted within the past hour, and this
trend of isolated wind damage will likely continue before storms
move off shore. Given the CAPE/shear parameter space, an instance of
severe hail will remain possible with any storm that can remain
isolated, but a gradual increase in cluster/linear modes will limit
this potential.
