Mesoscale Discussion 1607
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0404 AM CDT Fri Aug 28 2020
Areas affected...portions of southern MN
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 462...
Valid 280904Z - 281030Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 462
continues.
SUMMARY...Strong to severe wind gusts will continue this morning
across portions of southern MN.
DISCUSSION...A mature bow echo continues to track generally eastward
around 40-50 kt across southern MN early this morning. The southern
half of the bow appears to be intensifying per increases in 5 and 7
km CAPPI and an increase in forward motion over the past 30-60
minutes. Meanwhile, VWP data from KMPX and KFSD show a healthy rear
inflow jet of around 40-50 kt. This is further evident in decreased
reflectivity just behind the bow. Most surface observation sites
have measured gusts around 35-46 kt over the past 1-2 hours. This
suggest stronger gusts may be somewhat impacted by low level
inhibition. However, the bow had been moving slightly north of east
into lower dewpoints and slightly cooler surface temperatures in the
vicinity of a surface boundary draped across west-central into
southeast MN.
Expect that severe gusts will continue to be possible into the
morning hours, along and south of the surface boundary. Upper 60s to
low 70s dewpoints reside across this area, and should support
continued increase in southern portion of the bow.
