Mesoscale Discussion 1779
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0942 AM CST Tue Nov 10 2020
Areas affected...northeastern Nebraska...eastern South
Dakota...western/central Minnesota...and far northwestern Iowa
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 101542Z - 102145Z
SUMMARY...Periods of heavy snow will occur across the discussion
area through the afternoon.
DISCUSSION...Radar mosaic imagery depicts a broad area of moderate
to locally heavy snow over northeastern Nebraska and eastern South
Dakota currently. A weak surface low was also located south of this
area across northwestern Missouri, and a negative-tilt mid-level
wave was analyzed over central Nebraska. The eastward progression
of this mid-level wave - in concert with increasing frontogenesis
and gradual strengthening of the surface low - will aid in
increasing snowfall rates along with northeastward progression of
the precipitation shield through the afternoon. This notion is also
supported by recent high-resolution guidance. Rates of 1-2 inches
per hour will accompany the snow through the afternoon. Areas along
the eastern extent of the MD area (northwest Iowa into central
Minnesota) may see occasional mixing with freezing rain or sleet at
times as well.
