   Mesoscale Discussion 1836
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0601 PM CST Sat Dec 05 2020

   Areas affected...central Maine

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 060001Z - 060500Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow will continue to develop across portions of
northern and central Maine through this evening. Snow rates of 1 to
2 inches per hour are likely.

DISCUSSION...Evening water vapor imagery showed widespread
precipitation spreading inland from a well developed cyclone near
the coast of New England. Recent Radar and surface observations are
showing the gradual development of heavy banded snow northwest of
the rain/snow transition line from approximately Augusta toward
Houlton, ME. As the rapidly deepening surface low continues
northeastward, strong ascent driven by deep height falls and 850-700
mb frontogenisis will intensify precipitation through this evening.
The reservoir of cold air across northern and central Maine is not
particularly robust due to weak cold advection being offset by
strong low and mid-level warm advection. However, only gradual
northwestward movement of the rain snow line is expected through
this evening due to strong dynamic cooling from heavy precipitation
rates. This should keep the corridor of heaviest snow to the north
of the rain snow line near the I-95 corridor. The heaviest snow will
begin to wane after 6z as the upper trough and surface cyclone
   depart to the northeast.
