Mesoscale Discussion 1843
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0713 AM CST Sun Dec 13 2020
Areas affected...portions of southern Kansas and into central and
northern Oklahoma and vicinity
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 131313Z - 131815Z
SUMMARY...Snowfall rates near 1" per hour can be expected through
this morning across the discussion area.
DISCUSSION...Latest WV imagery shows the upper low moving
east-southeastward across eastern New Mexico, and is expected to
shift across the southern High Plains and turn eastward along and
just south of the Red River Valley. Ahead of this feature,
widespread precipitation is ongoing -- including snow from the Texas
Panhandle into western and northern Oklahoma, showers and
thunderstorms across southern Oklahoma and into north Texas, and a
narrow zone of mixed precipitation in between.
With time, as the upper system -- and associated/weak surface low
currently over the Texas South Plains area -- continue moving
eastward, a changeover to all snow is expected across central and
northeast Oklahoma. While snow gradually tapers from west to east
across the Texas Panhandle, strong large-scale ascent ahead of the
upper system will support a broad zone of moderate to heavy snow
across central and northeast Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas.
