Mesoscale Discussion 1870
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1051 PM CST Wed Dec 23 2020
Areas affected...Louisiana into southwest Mississippi
Concerning...Tornado Watch 516...
Valid 240451Z - 240645Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 516 continues.
SUMMARY...The threat for damaging gusts or brief tornadoes continues
with storms along the front.
DISCUSSION...Storms have largely consolidated into a squall line
along the length of the cold front, and should continue to
accelerate eastward tonight across the remainder of LA and southern
MS.
Surface analysis at 04Z shows mid 60s F dewpoints over LA and into
far southwest MS, which is contributing to around 500 J/kg MLCAPE.
Shear across the entire region is favorable for a continued severe
threat, including rotating storms given 0-1 SRH over 200 m2/s2.
Radar shows sporadic areas of rotation from near JAN southwestward
into LA, with either damaging gusts or a QLCS tornado possible. If
the narrow band of instability can remain intact beyond the
eastern/northern bounds of the watch, then local extensions in time
or space may become necessary, depending on storm trends.
