Mesoscale Discussion 1878
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0345 PM CST Thu Dec 24 2020
Areas affected...Northeast NC and southeast VA
Concerning...Tornado Watch 518...
Valid 242145Z - 242245Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 518 continues.
SUMMARY...The threat for a tornado or two may spread northeast of WW
518 across a portion of northeast NC into southeast VA this evening.
An additional tornado watch issuance is possible.
DISCUSSION...Low-topped convection across northeast NC has struggled
to maintain more persistent supercell structures within the northern
gradient of surface-based instability. Surface dew points have
increased into the low 60s, but may need to increase into the mid
60s before a more sustained supercell tornado risk can be maintained
farther north. Nevertheless, rather enlarged low-level hodographs
support a conditional risk for a supercell or two to intensify and
produce a tornado as this activity spreads northeast into southeast
VA this evening.
