Mesoscale Discussion 1879
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0613 PM CST Thu Dec 24 2020
Areas affected...the eastern Carolinas
Concerning...Tornado Watch 518...
Valid 250013Z - 250215Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 518 continues.
SUMMARY...Locally damaging gusts or a brief tornado remain possible
over the next several hours across eastern South and North Carolina.
DISCUSSION...A leading front continues to surge east from northern
FL across SC and into central NC as of 00Z. At times, storms along
the front into southern SC have shown rotation, with possible brief
QLCS spinups. Low-level shear remains favorable ahead of the front,
though instability appears to be the limiting factor. Still, with
moderate hourly pressure falls and 60s F dewpoints, further reports
of wind damage or brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out.
Meanwhile, convection well east of the front across eastern NC has
not been particularly productive despite strong shear and MLCAPE in
excess of 500 J/kg. Given the approaching front and continued
pressure falls, an isolated tornado remains possible with the
stronger storms. Low-level shear is also strongest in these areas,
with up to 400 m2/s2 0-1 km SRH.
