Mesoscale Discussion 1880
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0946 PM CST Thu Dec 24 2020
Areas affected...eastern North Carolina into far southeast Virginia
Concerning...Tornado Watch 519...
Valid 250346Z - 250645Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 519 continues.
SUMMARY...The threat for isolated damaging gusts or a brief tornado
continues across eastern North Carolina, and far southeast Virginia.
DISCUSSION...Surface analysis shows dewpoints have risen into the
mid 60s F as far north as southeast VA, providing a few hundred J/kg
of MLCAPE. While the greatest supercell potential still appears to
be offshore and over the Outer Banks, a line of shallow convection
continues to show better reflectively presentation along the cold
front. Ahead of this line, pressure falls continue, and surface
based parcels with mid 60s F dewpoints suggest strong gusts, or
perhaps a QLCS tornado, remain possible until the front clears the
coast. The AKQ VWP shows 0-1 SRH around 400 m2/s2, supporting
low-level rotation.
