   Mesoscale Discussion 1888
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0750 PM CST Tue Dec 29 2020

   Areas affected...Portions of Lower Michigan

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 300150Z - 300545Z

SUMMARY...Isolated areas of heavy snow possible this evening into
the overnight. Areas of central into northern Lower Michigan may see
slightly longer duration of snowfall rates nearing 1 in. per hour.
Freezing rain and sleet will be possible with additional
precipitation moving in to southern Lower Michigan by Wednesday
   morning.

DISCUSSION...Regional radar imagery shows an area of moderate to
heavy snow across the IL/WI border into far southwest Lower
Michigan. This band should continue toward the north and east this
evening into the overnight. Evening soundings from Detroit and
Gaylord show low-level dry air that will impact snow rates
initially. As is currently occurring in southwest Michigan,
low-levels will rapidly moisten as the precipitation band
approaches, leading to periods of heavy snow across central and
southern Lower Michigan. With the main synoptic trough intensifying
and becoming more neutrally tilted as it approaches, mid-level
ascent should tend to increase over the northern Great Lakes.
Furthermore, 850 mb warm advection should lessen to some degree as
the winds at that level veer with time. Still, parts of central into
northern Lower Michigan are likely to see the greater overlap of low
and mid-level vertical motion allowing for greater duration of the
   heavier snow rates.

For southern Lower Michigan, snow is expected to move out of the
area by 1-2 AM EST. Another round of precipitation will likely move
in by Wednesday morning. Given warming of the the profile aloft,
freezing rain and sleet will be more likely with the early morning
   activity.
