Mesoscale Discussion 1894
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0909 AM CST Thu Dec 31 2020
Areas affected...portions of west Texas and far southwestern
Oklahoma
Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation
Valid 311509Z - 312115Z
SUMMARY...Areas of winter mixed precipitation will result in
appreciable icing over the next several hours across the discussion
area.
DISCUSSION...Isentropic lift and forcing aloft associated with a
vigorous mid/upper low over far northeastern Mexico was contributing
to a broad area of rain/snow mix across the discussion area as of
1455Z. The precipitation was occurring amidst cold surface
temperatures around 32-33 F. Surface dewpoints were in the 24-30F
range, however, contributing to sub-zero wet-bulb temperatures. As
areas of moderate to occasionally heavy precipitation continue to
lift northward, low-level profiles will cool locally and promote
occasional freezing rain and/or sleet - especially along an axis
from near San Angelo to near Wichita Falls/Vernon. Accumulations of
0.05 inch per hour of freezing rain are likely beneath heavier
precipitation bands in these areas. To the west of this axis, areas
of moderate to occasionally heavy snow will be the greatest concern
through the afternoon as most models/point forecast soundings
indicate sub-freezing temperatures through the entire column. Over
time, occasional wintry mix of precipitation will drift northward
and perhaps affect portions of southwestern Oklahoma later this
afternoon.
