Mesoscale Discussion 0745
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0702 PM CDT Thu May 12 2022
Areas affected...Northwest Iowa
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 206...208...
Valid 130002Z - 130130Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 206, 208
continues.
SUMMARY...The damaging wind threat will persist into the late
evening/early overnight hours.
DISCUSSION...A bowing line segment is currently moving through far
eastern Nebraska where several reports of 65 to 80 mph wind gusts
have been received in the last 15 minutes. The outflow boundary is
now well ahead of the convection based on the KOAX WSR-88D. However,
it appears balanced enough to continue to support additional
convection and a strengthening cold pool, especially on northern
portions of the bow where the shear vector is oriented more
favorably for more upright convection. The environment downstream of
this bowing segment remains very favorable for severe wind gusts
with temperatures in the 90s and dewpoints in the low to mid 60s
yielding MLCAPE around 2000 J/kg.
The current trajectory of this bow will take it into northwest and
eventually northern Iowa later this evening and into the early
overnight hours. In addition, the last several runs of the WoFs
suggest severe wind gusts may persist into northern Iowa before
weakening below severe limits. Therefore, severe thunderstorm watch
212 has been coordinated with WFO Des Moines to cover the damaging
wind threat downstream of this ongoing line of storms.
